Sunday Setlist 2-8-09

part of Fred McKinnon’s sunday setlist carnival over at fredmckinnon.com

drum

We have drums!  Yay!  This was our first Sunday with our new drummer, and is was fabulous.  Yes, as you can imagine, it has been somewhat difficult having a worship band without a drum kit.  We have been using a djembe and our lead guitarist has been leading the rhythm… and it worked out, but having real live drums makes life so much easier on him.  Not dissing the djembe… they are fabulous, and the perfect instrument from time to time, but there are songs that need… more.

Our new bass player overslept this morning, so he didn’t make it in time (boo hoo!) but he promised he’s be there next week.  I don’t get to be there next week though, so I’m a twinge jealous.  C’est la vie.

Onto the list…

  • Not To Us [F]
  • Jesus Messiah [E]
  • Mighty To Save [A]
  • God of Wonders [C]
  • Children’s Hour
  • You Never Let Go [F]
  • Announcements
  • Message
  • You Never Let Go [F]

Not To Us is a song that our congregation seems to really love.  They started clapping right away and really joined in.  Yay!  Jesus Messiah was a new song in December, and usually Pastor Chris leads it… but he was doing good to play today due to a back injury this past week, so I led it.  I still think it needs a male vocal, but we made due.  I can’t seem to find a tempo that I like for that song – I think Tomlin does it just a skosh slow, but any faster and it seems too fast.  Go figure.  The congregation liked it though, so I guess we picked a good tempo.

We introduced Mighty To Save today, and fortunately enough people have been hearing it on the radio that a good chunk of the congregation was able to really sing out.  Taya got to lead out on that one, since she’s the only instrumentalist that really knows it.  She wasn’t quite expecting that (oops!) but she did a fabulous job.  Acoustic seems to fit it better anyway.  I have to say, that is a fun one to sing…

We finished up that set with God of Wonders, and Art stepped up beautifully to co-lead it with me.  That is just a great song, and we’ve been doing it forever, so everyone knows it really, really well.

Overall, everyone seemed to enter in again today – it is so wonderful to look out and see people lifting their hands, hearts and voices in worship!  There were lots of people clapping (we usually have 3 guaranteed clappers, but lots more today!) and even a few people wiping their eyes at one point.  Seeing people really enter in like that is something that makes you feel like you are really doing your job well.

For the kids we did You Never Let Go – new for them  – and Jennifer came up with some great motions for it.  I think all but 1 or 2 kids were really getting into it too – and there was a sizable group today.  I even caught a few adults doing the hand motions ;)   That is just a great song too.  Rich words that are a great reminder whenever you are going through something.

We are continuing through the scrolls, and today’s message was on taking the initiative and reaching out to those around us.  The passage was Luke 5:1-11, where the people are pressing in on Jesus while He is teaching, and he steps into Simon Peter’s boat.  After he is finished, he convinces Simon to go back out into deeper water and let down their nets.  This is the time that their nets were filled to overflowing, starting to break, and the boats were so full they were sinking.  Simon Peter, James & John “left everything and joined Him.”

The focus of the message was on being intentional in reaching out to those around us with the message of Jesus Christ.  To carefully “step into” the lives of those around us, to build relationships with them, to see where their needs are and to pour into their lives what God has given to us.  It should be on the church site tomorrow sometime.  You can give a listen here.

Pastor Chris did a great job – especially considering the pain he was in!

We have an all-church meeting tonight, so this is a short post.  Heading back over here in a bit!

Hope your Sunday was a great one!
Jennifer

I like your set! and I so have to agree about tempo on Jesus Messiah. I can’t find a happy medium either.

So funny that you and Janaki both mentioned the tempo on “Jesus Messiah”. We have had the exact same problem it always either seems a little to slow or a little to fast. Great song though.
